dental inlay on a molar tooth

When teeth need to be restored, many people will choice to have an inlay that can be made out of porcelain, composite, or even gold. Porcelain are the most popular of these three choices because they always look the most people, and they are made in a lab for hygiene reasons that then implanted by a dentist.

Decay and trauma are the most usual reasons that a patient will require an inlay, and many people will choose them over fillings because it ensures that the dentist can save as much of your natural tooth as possible.

No solution is perfect of course, and it is possible that an inlay could fall out after years of use, or require maintenance – but they are still the most durable option out there, and will create a wonderfully natural smile.

You should consider inlays if you have:

  • Broken teeth, or ones that have fractured
  • Broken fillings
  • Decaying teeth
  • Large fillings

Or even if you just want to improve the way that your teeth look!

What is involved in getting an inlay?

Because your dentist wants to make sure that they get absolutely everything perfect for you, receiving inlays will be done over two appointments. At the first, a mold will be taken of your teeth so that the experts can make the inlays perfectly to your specifications. The dentist will numb your tooth, and then take away any old fillings or decay that is there so that your tooth will be ready for the proper inlay when it has been made. In the meantime, a temporary inlay is placed in.

At your second appointment, the dentist will have your new inlays, and they will be placed into your mouth carefully for the best possible fit. When the dentist is happy that your bite is back to normal, they will give you careful instructions on how to look after your new teeth.
